Obesity Clinical Update: 11 September 2026

With ObesityWeek and EASD 2026 approaching, this update covers the latest NHS tirzepatide data, the NICE lower BMI threshold timeline, the UKCO 2026 programme, and a progress update on the semaglutide MASH MHRA review.

NHS Tirzepatide — 8-Month Data

  • Cumulative patients: 220,000
  • Prescribing rate: 9,500 new patients per week (stable)
  • 6-month outcomes (n=24,800 with 6-month data): Mean weight loss 13.2%; ≥10% weight loss 62%; ≥15% weight loss 28%

Equity update: The proportion of patients from the most deprived quintile has risen to 33% (vs 28% at month 1), suggesting continued improvement in equitable access.

Prescribing by region: Significant variation persists between ICBs (prescribing rates range from 180 to 420 patients per 100,000 population). NHS England has written to the 8 lowest-prescribing ICBs requesting improvement plans.

NICE has confirmed that the final guidance on lower BMI thresholds for obesity pharmacotherapy will be published in October 2026. If the final guidance confirms the draft proposal, an estimated additional 400,000 people in England would become eligible for obesity pharmacotherapy.
