Obesity Clinical Update: 15 May 2026 — ECO 2026 Lisbon
ECO 2026 highlights: CagriSema REDEFINE-3 weight maintenance data, AMG 133 Phase 2b results, NHS real-world tirzepatide data presented. UK obesity prevalence reaches 30% for first time.
ECO 2026 in Lisbon delivers a packed programme of late-breaking data. This update covers the key clinical presentations from the first two days of the congress.
ECO 2026 — Day 1–2 Highlights
CagriSema REDEFINE-3 — Weight Maintenance Data
Novo Nordisk presented 52-week data from REDEFINE-3, the weight maintenance trial of CagriSema.
Key findings:
- Participants continuing CagriSema: maintained 24.8% weight loss
- Participants switched to placebo: regained 11.2% of body weight over 52 weeks
- Net weight difference at 52 weeks post-randomisation: 12.4% in favour of continued CagriSema
These data confirm that weight regain occurs upon discontinuation of CagriSema, reinforcing the need for long-term treatment.
AMG 133 (Maridebart Cafraglutide) — Phase 2b Results
Amgen presented Phase 2b results for AMG 133, a GIP receptor antagonist/GLP-1 receptor agonist bispecific antibody administered monthly.
Phase 2b results (52 weeks, n=420):
- Mean weight loss: 20.0% with AMG 133 420 mg monthly vs 2.4% placebo
- ≥20% weight loss: 52% AMG 133 vs 4% placebo
- Dosing interval: once monthly (vs once weekly for most current agents)
- GI adverse events in 48% (lower than weekly GLP-1 agonists)
Phase 3 initiation is planned for Q4 2026.
NHS Real-World Tirzepatide Data — UK Presentation
The NHS England/NIHR collaboration presented 3-month real-world data from the tirzepatide programme to an international audience for the first time. Key messages: real-world weight loss (7.8% at 16 weeks) is consistent with trial data, and the equity framework has successfully increased prescribing in deprived populations.
UK Obesity Prevalence — 30% Milestone
NHS Digital published the Health Survey for England 2025 this week, showing that adult obesity prevalence in England has reached 30.2% for the first time, up from 28.0% in 2022.
- Obesity prevalence: 30.2% (men 29.8%, women 30.6%)
- Overweight or obese: 67.4%
- Severe obesity (BMI ≥40 kg/m²): 4.8% (up from 3.9% in 2022)
- Obesity prevalence in the most deprived quintile: 38.4% vs 21.2% in the least deprived
This update is prepared for UK healthcare professionals. All prescribing decisions should reference current NICE guidance, the BNF, and individual patient clinical assessment.
