NICE — Mental Health and Obesity: Final Guidance
NICE has published final guidance on the management of mental health comorbidities in adults with obesity receiving pharmacotherapy.
Key recommendations:
- Screen all patients for depression, anxiety, and eating disorders before initiating obesity pharmacotherapy (PHQ-9, GAD-7, SCOFF questionnaire)
- Patients with active suicidal ideation or recent self-harm: individual risk-benefit assessment required
- Binge eating disorder: refer for psychological intervention (CBT or DBT) before or alongside pharmacotherapy initiation
- GLP-1 receptor agonists are not contraindicated in patients with stable depression or anxiety
- Monitor mental health at 16-week review and annually
Semaglutide and Parkinson's Disease — Phase 2 Results
A Phase 2 trial of semaglutide 1 mg in patients with early Parkinson's disease (n=156) published in The Lancet Neurology showed:
- Slower progression on the MDS-UPDRS Part III motor score at 52 weeks: −3.1 points semaglutide vs +1.8 points placebo (p=0.003)
- Safety: comparable to semaglutide use in other indications; no unexpected neurological adverse events
A Phase 3 trial is being planned.
